Moving, ugh. We know, we know. Nobody likes to move. But honestly, it's also kind of exciting. It means new beginnings—a fresh start. And it's the perfect opportunity to go through everything so you aren't taking anything to your new space that you don't need anymore. It's a win win, really. Sure, you're going to have to put in some work, but the payoff will be SO worth it in the end— we promise! We help a ton of clients through the entire moving process, start to finish, so we've learned a few things along the way. Read on for some of our best tips and strategies for making your move as seamless as possible.

On day one, we always show up with our starter pack of trash bags, an array of colorful painters tape and sharpies. The first step is to delineate what color tape will represent trash, donate, and any other categories. Start with one room, or better yet, one section of a room. Don't overwhelm yourself: you got this. Once you get started, you'll be surprised how quickly it goes. Pretty soon, you'll realize that the trash and donation bags are growing, and you'll start to feel lighter.

Now you're packing. Whether you're doing it yourself or hired movers, the supplies are pretty much the same. But we like to throw in these oversized bags for bedding and soft items. They're great, affordable, and you can use them at your new home for storage. Also, don't hesitate to over-label those boxes. It will really come in handy when you're unpacking, and your future self will thank you.

You did it! You moved! Now, we cannot stress this enough: unpack immediately! And unpack with intention. Doing it right the first time is so important. It's easy to want to just get everything out of boxes to get it over with and deal with it later, but boy is that dangerous. Like we did in the beginning, start small with one section of one room. Once everything in that category is unpacked so you can see it all, put it away intentionally and with care. After you've finished doing this throughout the house, room by room, the sense of relief knowing that you took the time to do it right will be immense.

Next, while you were unpacking, you probably clocked some items that you needed. But, when it comes to moving into a new space, that doesn't mean you need to go out and buy a bunch of new stuff hastily. Take inventory of what you have that will work in your new space before going crazy, and take the time to plan for what you DO need. Maybe your silverware organizer doesn't fit in your new drawer, or did your old home have different bathroom storage? Are you going to need more storage solutions in your closet? Take the time to assess your needs, take measurements, and make smart purchases. Incorporating organizing products is also our favorite part: it’s when the real fun begins and how a home really starts to take shape. We love to help clients make the most out of every square inch of their space.
